Australia and Germany to play World Cup final
The 2010 men's hockey world cup final will be played between Germany and Australia at the Dhyan Chand stadium, New Delhi on Saturday.
A superbly planned and executed game by the German's put paid to England's hopes of their first world cup final since 1986. Germany were always in control of the match, taking a 3-1 half time lead and pushing on to a comfortable 4-1 win.
The German defence was excellent throughout, and perhaps England's depleted forward strength in the end told against them. The defending champions took the lead in the sixth minute with a Jan-Marco Montag corner. Oliver Korn added a field goal in the 18th minute before Richard Smith converted and England corner in the 18th. Germany then scored with a Martin Haner corner four minutes before half time. Linus Butt tidied up a corner in the 60th minute to finish the scoring.
England's James Fair had an excellent game and produced a brilliant double penalty-corner save in the first half.
The other semi-final was a much closer affair. Australia led from the 27th minute with a well executed Luke Doerner corner. And they doubled the lead through Glenn Turner (FG) in the 55th minute. The Netherlands then had their best spell of the game. Taeke Taekema opened the Dutch scoring in the 58th minute with a penalty stroke and the Netherlands continued to create attacking opportunities for the remainder of the game. But the Kookaburras held on to their 2-1 lead, consigning the Dutch to the bronze medal game against England.
In the wooden spoon match, the Canadians sneaked an extra-time win over Pakistan, 3-2.

Glenn Turner
Wonderful to see Turner scoring again, his rise is a testament to his hard work in local and Australian hockey over many years.
